Separating News from Noise

چکیده

By treating mouse fibroblasts with varying concentrations of tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and measuring the resulting shifts in the production of transcription factors NFB and ATF-2, the researchers determined that individual cells are essentially capable of a one-bit response to this ligand, where signaling is simply on or ‘off.’ Many intermediate steps lie between TNF and NFB, and the authors modeled signal transmission in this pathway as a ‘tree’ network. In this model, information is transmitted along a single ‘trunk,’ in which noise can have a major impact and introduce bottlenecks in signal transmission, before branching out to yield different outputs. Endogenously-produced TNF inhibitors can dampen noise arising within this system, but also limit the ultimate dynamic range of signal response.

Removing Noise Content from Online News Articles

A typical news web page consists of news articles. Along with the news article content tags, it also contains tags of navigation links, privacy & copyright information and advertisements. These tags are called as noise tags. Given an online news article in html form, existing works extract articles by discovering informative tags using various heuristic techniques. In this paper, we follow an a...

Noisy signaling: Theory and experiment

We investigate a noisy signaling game, in which nature adds random noise to the (costly) message chosen. Theoretically, with an unfavorable prior the separating equilibrium vanishes for low noise. It reappears for intermediate levels of noise, where messages increase with noise. A pooling equilibrium always exists. In our experiment, noise works as an empirical equilibrium selection device. Whe...

Separating Facts from Fiction: Linguistic Models to Classify Suspicious and Trusted News Posts on Twitter

Pew research polls report 62 percent of U.S. adults get news on social media (Gottfried and Shearer, 2016). In a December poll, 64 percent of U.S. adults said that “made-up news” has caused a “great deal of confusion” about the facts of current events (Barthel et al., 2016). Fabricated stories in social media, ranging from deliberate propaganda to hoaxes and satire, contributes to this confusio...

Towards Answering Opinion Questions: Separating Facts from Opinions and Identifying the Polarity of Opinion Sentences

Opinion question answering is a challenging task for natural language processing. In this paper, we discuss a necessary component for an opinion question answering system: separating opinions from fact, at both the document and sentence level. We present a Bayesian classifier for discriminating between documents with a preponderance of opinions such as editorials from regular news stories, and ...

Separating Topological Noise from Features Using Persistent Entropy

Persistent homology appears as a fundamental tool in Topological Data Analysis. It studies the evolution of k−dimensional holes along a sequence of simplicial complexes (i.e. a filtration). The set of intervals representing birth and death times of k−dimensional holes along such sequence is called the persistence barcode. k−dimensional holes with short lifetimes are informally considered to be ...
